We do not have any pigs or hogs at Maranatha Farm, but many farmers around the world raise hogs. Pigs are kept for meat. We get bacon. sausage, and ham from hogs. They are smart animals, about as smart as dogs. Some people even keep them for house pets. And like a dog they can be house broken and walked on a leash.
Many people think hogs are dirty animals but in truth they are very cleanly. Hogs will never mess where they eat or sleep and will always go to the potty in one spot in their pen where they live. They like to play in mud because pigs can not sweat. So when they get hot they wallow in mud or water to cool down not to get dirty.
Hogs eat grain and plants. They have flexible and tough noses that they use to root and dig with in the dirt where they find plant roots and other tasty things that they like to eat.
Mother Hogs:
Mother hogs or pigs are called sows. They usually have big litters of babies. Sometimes 12 at a time. The mother carries her babies in a special place in her tummy for 3 months, three weeks, and three days. After the babies are born she makes milk for them just like many other farm animals do.
Father Hogs
Father hogs are called boars. They are bigger and stronger than the sows. They have big sharp tusk like teeth that are very sharp and they will use them to fight with. Boars can be very mean like other father farm animals and it is best to never trust one even if he seems friendly.
Baby Hogs:
Baby hogs are called piglets. I think that they are one of the cutest baby animals. Don't you? If you'd like to watch some new born little piglets and their mommy click here. Enjoy the cute little piggies and see if you can count them.
